The well-known MacBook Air from Apple has undergone its most significant overhaul since its 2008 debut, losing its iconic wedge shape and becoming smaller, with a larger screen and better than ever for 2022, however it caught the attention of students.

Can students go for M2 in 2023?

The updated laptop has Apple's next-generation M2 CPU in a more svelte flat aluminium casing, expanding upon the internal modifications made with the revolutionary M1 model in 2020.

In 2018, Apple gave it a significant design change, and this year it has undergone yet another important update. The new MacBook Air, unveiled in June at the WWDC 2022 conference, is an addition to the current-generation MacBook Pro family and comes with a brand-new Apple-designed chip named M2. 

According to reports, this new SoC outperforms the M1 in speed and power efficiency while maintaining excellent battery life. Even though the M2 MacBook Air is more expensive than the M1 Air, Apple is still selling the M1 Air for the time being. There are numerous little improvements and a few major ones with the new M2 Air.

The laptop feels exceptionally robust despite having a thin chassis, with no flex in the deck and a stiff lid. Open the lid to discover a 13.6-inch screen that is 25% brighter, just as clear and lovely, and offers a little bit more workspace than the 13.3-inch screen it replaces.

Like the MacBook Pro, it includes a notch at the top of the screen that holds an upgraded 1080p webcam, which is a long overdue improvement for those of us still tethered to virtual meetings. Four speakers that are concealed in the Air's deck produce a sound that is reasonably wide and immersive for a laptop.

 the variations' RAM and storage can be customized as desired, but these components cannot be upgraded in the future, so you must make an informed decision. If you want to go all out, the new MacBook Air can be configured with 24GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD, but the price will be astronomical. If you qualify for a student discount, prices will be somewhat reduced.

In contrast to the M1 Air, the M2 MacBook Air has two new finishes: Midnight and Starlight, in addition to Space Grey and Silver. In the box, you will find a laptop, a Type-C to MagSafe 3 connection, and a USB Type-C power converter.

Design

The new M2 MacBook Air cannot be confused with the older Intel-based model, unlike the M1 Air, which might. It has fewer ports and resembles a smaller 14-inch MacBook Pro. The recognizable wedge design of the MacBook Air has 

been replaced with a base that is evenly thick and a flat lid. Since the M2 MacBook Air lacks a MagSafe charging port, you have two more Thunderbolt ports available. These are USB 4 compliant and have a 40Gbps maximum bandwidth (the same as Thunderbolt 3). The latest MacBook Air can run an 

external monitor at 60Hz in resolutions up to 6K. On the side opposite the ports, there is a 3.5mm headphone connector that can accommodate high-impedance headphones.

Apple was able to fit a slightly taller and larger 13.6-inch LED-backlit panel with a resolution of 2560x1664 pixels by reducing the size of the display's top and side bezels. In addition, the brightness has been raised from 400 nits on the M1 Air to 500 nits. 

Other Apple technologies like True Tone and P3 wide-colour spectrum coverage are also present, and the display still has a 60Hz refresh rate. Similar to the MacBook Pro models, the M2 MacBook Air's display features a notch to make room for an upgraded 1080p FaceTime camera.

Battery

The M2 transforms the MacBook Air into a quick, highly capable device that can easily manage both short bursts of more demanding tasks and any general computing necessity. It has no fans, so when it operates, it is entirely silent. The battery life continues to be industry-leading, frequently providing more than 16 hours of use between charges. One of the first devices to include Apple's upcoming M2 processor is the 2022 MacBook Air. Compared to the M1's once-in-a-generation leap in 2020, it is a gradual improvement, but it is still up to 18% quicker and has 35% more powerful graphics.

Sustainability

Aluminium, steel, tin, rare earth elements, plastic, and aluminium may all be found in the recycled components used to make the MacBook Air. In its analysis, Apple breaks down the computer's environmental impact. Apple provides free recycling and trade-in options, including for non-Apple products.

Money-related

Similar to the MacBook Pro from last year, the MacBook Air runs the same version of macOS. Generally speaking, it is a fantastic platform with high reliability and little maintenance.

Since last year, Apple has added the Universal Operate feature, which enables Mac's keyboard and trackpad to control other Apple products. This feature is especially helpful when used with an iPad, although it can be inconsistent in spots with spotty wifi.

The brand-new M2 MacBook Air is improved than the previous M1 MacBook Air in almost every regard, and it's a class act. Apple's new M2 SoC is a respectable incremental upgrade over the M1, but if you're hoping for a major leap forward like we experienced when switching from Intel to Apple hardware, that's not going to happen. 

Going from M1 to M2, depending on your video editing or transcoding procedure, you might or might not observe an improvement. If you want a laptop that looks like a MacBook Pro but doesn't necessarily need the extra processing power or want to pay the higher price, the M2 MacBook Air is a great option.
